The Book of Mormon “is blissfully original, irreverent, ingenious, outspoken, and hilarious’ New York Daily News Joe Dziemianowicz.
As written by Sydney Morning Herald, Nathanael Cooper.
Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with music by Frozen composer Bobby Lopez, the show was an immediate hit on Broadway taking out nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award for best music theatre cast album.
The Australian production was nominated for a swag of Helpmann Awards and took home the awards for best musical and best direction.
Drawing from the dark humour of South Park that made Parker and Stone household names, The Book of Mormon follows two Mormon missionaries as they attempt to spread the word of the Mormon faith to a fictional tribe in Uganda.
The show effortlessly manages to skewer organised religion, Mormonism and music theatre itself in a satirical, but occasionally offensive, song and dance routine.
Described as “the best musical ever written” by The New York Times‘ notoriously tough critic Ben Brantley, the show has managed to thrive despite its controversial themes and frequent use of profanities, and has even been embraced by the Mormon Church.
On Broadway the church took out advertisements in the show’s Playbills with the message that “the book is always better”. In Australia outdoor advertising for the church increased around the show’s opening and Mormon missionaries were spotted around the theatre and throughout the Melbourne CBD spreading their message.
